Throughout my campaign I will seek to participate in or visit with agencies, organizations, and programs that make a difference in our county. In my opinion face-to-face and hands-on experience is the best way to learn and understand the challenges they are addressing. This is an activity I am committed to continue throughout the election and during my tenure on the County Council.
I attended a powerful and impactful event at the Howard County Domestic Violence Center today, now called HopeWorks. “In Her Shoes Experiential Workshop” provided vivid insight into the challenges faced by victims of this insidious crime. During this event participants take on the persona of a domestic violence victim. As we all learned, the people effected by this horrible crime come from all walks of life – social, economic, ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation. The stories participants followed were based on real people and real outcomes. I was caught off-guard when, going through the steps in the program, I learned that the person I was portraying was killed by her husband. I highly recommend the program and getting involved with HopeWorks and I’m proud to have sponsored their good works! Learn more about how you can help this great organization.
